CID Advocates for Inclusive assistive devices

June 4th each year is set aside to celebrate World Assistive Technology (AT) Day. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the impact that assistive technology has on the lives of millions of people worldwide. AT is any device, software, or system that helps individuals with disabilities overcome barriers and participate fully in daily life.

From screen readers and voice recognition software that empower people with visual impairments and learning disabilities to communicate and access information, to mobility aids like wheelchairs and prosthetics that enhance independence, assistive technology is incredibly diverse. It also includes simpler solutions like adapted utensils for those with limited dexterity or specialised seating for individuals with physical limitations.

While often associated with people with disabilities, it is important to recognise that assistive technology benefits a much broader population. Older adults experiencing age-related limitations, individuals recovering from accidents or temporary disabilities, and even pregnant women can all leverage AT to enhance their comfort, safety, and ability to perform everyday tasks.

The real power of AT lies in its ability to unlock potential. It’s not just about making tasks easier; it’s about fostering independence, promoting inclusion, and empowering individuals to pursue their goals and passions. Assistive technology allows people to participate more fully in education, employment, recreation, and all aspects of community life.

World AT Day is a reminder that access to assistive technology is a fundamental right. We need to continue advocating for policies and funding that support the development, availability, and affordability of these life-changing tools. By investing in AT, we are investing in a more equitable and inclusive future for everyone.

At the Centre for Inclusive Development (CID), we are committed to advancing the field of assistive technology and ensuring that it is accessible to all who need it. We believe that local production is key to affordability and sustainability. Therefore, we are committed to the local production of AT through innovation. We are committed to supporting young persons with disability to learn how to repair AT, and we are committed to advocating for the removal of import duties on AT.

Use today to learn more about assistive technology, share stories of its impact, and support initiatives that make Assistive Technology accessible to all who need it. What assistive technology are you thankful for, or what AT innovations inspire you? Share in the comments below!
